Halloween's origins can be traced back to ancient Celtic harvest festivals, called Samhain, in which the Celts ritually ended the summer harvest season and ushered in the winter season. Samhain was also believed to be a time when the veil between the living and the dead was particularly thin, allowing spirits and ghosts to crossover.
When the Celts were Christianized, All Saints'Day was established on November 1st as a day to honor all saints andmartyrs. The eve of this day became known as All Hallows' Evelater anglicized to Halloween. Over time, Halloween's paganroots were merged with Christian elements, resulting in a holiday that is both sacred and profane.

Carving pumpkins
The colors black and orange are also a part of Halloween. Black is a symbol for night and orange is the color of pumpkins. A jack-o'lantern is a hollowed-out pumpkin with a face carvedon oneside. Candles are usually placed inside, giving the face of aspooky glow.
