Some experts think that all students should learn musical instruments. Do you agree or disagree with this idea?

While it seems understandable for some to reckon that the young generation should be nurtured with an instrument study, I would argue that this type of learning process should not necessarily be compulsory to all the children.
Many consider the instrument learning a must because they have found the potential benefits of this cultivation. For those who lean their wishes on children's future development, they may focus the attention on how an instrument can develop musical talents or intelligence of the next generation. It is true that for those gifted ones, a deepened exploration in, say, piano or violin performance may provide them an opportunity of outperforming their peers. They are very likely to find a "quick-path" leading to achievements or fortune and tend to be more popular than others among people. Unlike most people, musical students who are adept in an instrument have extra chances to devote to music-related areas, becoming musicians, holding concerts, or serving a symphony orchestra, thus avoiding the fierce competition with many other students in their future employment. Even if one is not that talented in music, learning an instrument is also beneficial: it requires concentration and cooperation between the left and right brain. That means one could unlearn some bad habits like being absentminded, and develop their intelligence and even the aesthetic vision during the process of playing the instrument.
However, the occasions mentioned above are just practical for some particular students, on which they are gifted or at least capable enough of handling the instrument and accomplish a long period of acquisition. The truth is, on closer scrutiny, that it is impractical for all children to achieve this goal. There are always students who are born without any feeling of, say, notes, pitch, or rhythm, and it is almost impossible to let them gain any insight or sense in a musical instrument. It follows that this cultivation is such torture to this type of learner; they may suffer from repetitive, dull practices and gain no progress or enjoyment during the process. The time, energy, or money spent on this may be to no avail as for these children. Besides, to make instrument learning compulsory also provokes pressures to families. Most instruments always cost much, and that is certainly not friendly to many parents who are still struggling with the living of a family. That is still not the whole story until we have realized that not all parents can be that time-available to accompany their immature, playful kids to finish a learning process that requires too much stamina for a child to accomplish alone. That renders some children out of the ability to learn an instrument.
In conclusion, I would much agree that there is no need for all students to learn an instrument despite the advantages to the individual development for the children.
